Introduction

Ideal for those looking to keep a large number of birds or to increase the size of their flock, this 24x8 walk-in chicken coop that can house up to 50 chickens offers plenty of living space and two large walk-in doors. This stationary coop features a gabled roof and the Scandinavian design makes this coop a pleasant addition to your exterior living space.

The large aviary provides the chickens with a large and secure space for roaming and the coop itself will ensure they can rest in comfort without the worry of predators. The gabled roof will keep your birds dry even in the toughest wet weather and with proper insulation and heating, this design can be ideal for areas that receive a large amount of snowfall. The windows provide fresh air in warmer weather and the large entry doors give you easy access for collecting eggs and performing maintenance and cleanup.

Step 1 – Foundation Preparation

1.1 Clear and align the ground according to the dimensions in the drawing.

1.2 Dig the trenches under a foundation 1 ft deep and 1 ft wide.

1.3 Fill the trenches to ground level with concrete and let cure, or harden. Since curing times vary between brands, read the packaging for recommended curing times.

1.4 Once the concrete has cured, use standard-sized bricks and lay them across the foundation. You will need roughly 200 bricks for this step.

Step 2 – Framing The Floor

2.1 Provide eight joists from the pressure-treated lumber with cross-section 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch and install them into the frame according to the drawing.

2.2 Secure the joists to the bottom frame with 3×4″ screws.

Step 3 – Install Plywood For The Floor

3.1 Prepare the 9/16″ plywood for the floor sheathing according to the drawing.

3.2 Secure the plywood with 2″ wood screws.

Step 4 – Assembling the Wall Frames

4.1 Cut 12 boards for the rafters. At this step, you will need 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ material to prepare the rafters and the wall studs.

4.2 Cut 12 boards for the wall studs.

4.3 By using this interlocking method, you add more stability to the structure. Secure the rafters and studs using 3×5″ wood screws.

Step 5 – Assemble the Decking

5.1 Prepare pressure-treated boards with cross-section 9 1/4 x 3/4 inch for decking in necessary quantity. Provide openings for windows.

5.2 Secure them with 8×3″ wood screws.

Step 6 – Install the Metal Roofing

6.1 Prepare the sheet metal (23 Gauge) by making the necessary cuts and bends.

6.2 Use 1 1/2 ” sheet metal screws and neoprene washers to secure the roofing. Self-tapping screws cost a little more but make this step easier.

Step 7 – Assemble the Additional Rim Joist

It is necessary to prepare 4 additional rim joist.

7.1 Prepare rim joists from the pressure-treated lumber with cross-section 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch.

7.2 Secure rim joists with 5″ wood screws.

Step 8 – Assemble Front Wall Frame

8.1 Assemble the frame from the pressure-treated lumber with cross-section 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch.

8.2 Connect the beams with 2×4″ wood screws.

Step 9 – Front Door Installation

9.1 Assemble the frame from the pressure-treated lumber with cross section 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 ” with 5″ wood screws according to the drawing. Prepare and install 9/16″ plywood sheet.

9.2 Install door trims from the pressure-treated lumber with cross section 2 1/2 x 3/4″ according to the drawing.

9.3 Install three 6″ door hinges using 6×2″ wood screws. Finish the door installation by attaching 4″ surface bolt and 6″ door pull (see figures K, L).

Step 10 – Assemble Inner Wall Frame

10.1 Assemble the frame from the pressure-treated lumber with cross-section 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch.

10.2 Connect the beams with 2×4″ wood screws.

Step 11 – Inner Coop’s Door Installation

11.1 Assemble the frame similar to the Step 20 from the pressure-treated lumber with cross section 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch with 2×5″ wood screws according to the drawing. Prepare and install 9/16″ plywood sheet.

11.2 Install door trims from the pressure-treated lumber with cross section 2 1/2 x 3/4″ according to the drawing.

11.3 Install three 6″ door hinges using 6×2″ wood screws. Finish the door installation by attaching 4″ surface bolt and 6″ door pull.

Step 12 – Aviary’s Door Assembly

12.1 Assemble the frame from the pressure-treated lumber with cross section 2 1/2 x 1 1/2″ with 2×5″ wood screws according to the drawing.

12.2 Prepare 1/4″ wire mesh in the required quantity and install it on the inner side of the frame with the help of industrial stapler.

12.3 Install three 6″ door hinges using 6×2″ wood screws. Finish the door installation by attaching 4″ surface bolt and 6″ door pull.

Step 13 – Window Installation

It is necessary to prepare 2 windows.

13.1 Using 1 1/2″ x 3/4″ pressure-treated material to create the window frames and cut to the dimensions indicated in the following illustration. Additionally, cut a 3/4″ x 1/2″ support member that will run horizontally and 3/4″ x 3/4″ support member that will run vertically in the window frame. Use 2×2″ wood screws to secure. On the inner left side, it is necessary to cut the grooves for hinges.

13.2 Prepare 1/4″ wire mesh for window according to the dimensions.

13.3 Make the inner frame from the pressure-treated lumber with a cross section 3/4 x 3/4 inch. On the inner side, it is necessary to mill the groove for glass. On the outer left side, it is necessary to mill the grooves for hinges.

13.4 Prepare and install glass into inner frame groove and fasten it by window beading from four sides. Use for this 1/2″ galvanized nails.

13.5 Install hinges (4″) and assemble the window.

Step 14 – Assembling the Nesting Box

14.1 Use 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ and 3/4″ x 3 1/2″ pressure treated material to create the frame for the nesting box and use 2×4″ and 2×5″ screws to secure them.
14.2 Prepare the 9/16″ plywood for horizontal and vertical walls and install them with 1″ wood screws.

14.3 Using 3/4″ x 1 1/2″ and 1 1/2″ x 1/2″ material, cut and install the roost as shown in the illustration.

Step 15 – Decorate the Coop
