4x12 walk in chicken coop for 8 chickens

Chicken coop overview

The 4’x12’ EggPlant walk-in chicken coop provides 48 sq. ft. on the ground, 20 sq. ft. inside the coop, and an exterior-mounted nesting box. Cabinet-style doors open up into the coop, and there’s also a convenient door on the nesting box for making cleaning and egg harvesting a breeze as well as tending to hatchlings. The aviary is fully enclosed with wire mesh for maximum protection for the chickens, and the structure can safely accommodate up to eight chickens. The EggPlant walk-in chicken coop features a full-sized door, a ladder leading up into the coop, and additional access door into the coop, making convenience good from all sides. The structural integrity of this coop is designed with pressure-treated 4”x4”s, and the weight load is supported on a solid concrete and brick footing. The EggPlant also has the capacity to be interchangeable by adding more runs or aviaries to it.

Premium Plan Description

The 4’x12’ EggPlant walk-in chicken coop’s plan incorporates a step by step instruction manual into its design. Included in the material list are building materials like pressure-treated lumber, corrugated roofing materials, concrete, plywood, wire mesh, bolts, screws, and hardware. A medium skill level is required for building this structure, but the EggPlant’s plan is also available in the extended version, which can help novice builders. The plan works on a series of additional steps that are in numerical order. They show the size to cut the lumber and how to build the doors, nesting boxes, aviary, lean-to roof, and other components of the structure. Every step utilizes 2D and 3D blueprints to provide measurements of each section as well as awesome views of what the section looks like upon completion.

FAQs & Answers

1. Do I need a permit to build a chicken coop?

A: In most cases, local regulations stipulate buildings that are over 100sqft require a permit, chicken coops included. If your coop is under a 100sqft, chances are you don’t need one.

2. Can I legally have chickens in my backyard?

A: Most bylaws and regulations stipulate that where chickens are allowed, a required distance between your neighbor’s property line and the coop needs to be enacted.

3. How much does it cost to build a chicken coop?

A: This depends on the type, style, and size of the chicken coop. For smaller coops 100sqft and under, you can expect to pay between $500 and $1000, and for larger coops 200sqft and more, you can expect to pay between $1500 to $4000.

4. Can I let my chickens out of the walk-in aviary?

A: There are advantages and disadvantages to free-roaming chickens. The advantage is allowing more space for your chickens to explore, and the downside is they leave a lot of chicken poop, dig holes, and they can cause havoc in flowerbeds and gardens.

5. Can my chickens stay out in the aviary overnight?

A: If you want to encourage your chickens to lay eggs in the nesting boxes, it’s a good idea to keep them inside the coop and nesting box area at night because some chickens will try to lay eggs outside of the coop. Most walk-in chicken coops are designed with adequate space inside of the coop for the number of chickens it was designed for.
